Location
Located on the outskirts of Malelane, Mpumalanga (South Africa), Khanyazwe Flexpower (“KFP”) is a phased 1000MW flexible gas power development.
With both the grid and gas pipeline (ROMPCO) access within a 500m radius of the project location, this project is well positioned to leverage off the existing infrastructure thus reducing complexity and improving cost effectiveness.
Phase Development Approach
The project will be developed in two phases:
- Phase 1: Targeted for the Department of Energy’s Gas IPP Programme
- Phase 2: For submission into either future gas IPP programmes or for direct sales to either the System Operator or Energy traders
Technology Choice
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) technology has been selected due to its superior flexible characteristics and its extremely low water consumption. These two features are well aligned with the role of gas to provide flexibility to the system as per the IRP2019 whilst also not impacting on the already scarce water resources experienced in South Africa.
